29 Dec I did a with skills course. The course was full but they took pity on my Karapoti aspirations and let me in. I was the only person on the course who'd been biking less than a couple of years.
It was excellent! The entire day's cost was worth it just for the first hour in which they got everyone's bikes set up properly. They moved my brake and gear levers around so that I could brake one-handed, they fiddled my seat height. But best of all they moved my seat forward! I can climb hills without the nose of my bike coming up! Obvious stuff to the experts I'm sure, but very helpful for the rest of us.
Then they taught balance: weight on the pedals not the handlebars, forward lean into a "half-pressup" position so that you can take it if the bars move up and down and not move your body. We circled magic carpet track working this and that. Then braking: drop the heels when braking, front brake is your friend downhill. Skidding with the back brake.
All in all extremely worthwhile. I'd highly recommend the course to anyone, and may well do it again next summer.
